Trump describes Netanyahu as ‘war hero’
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “a war hero” at a time when the Israeli leader is facing widespread condemnation over the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and Israel’s ongoing military offensive there.
Speaking with conservative commentator Mark Levin on Tuesday, Trump praised Netanyahu as “a good man” who is “fighting.” He added, “He’s a war hero. I guess I am too… I sent those planes,” referring to US airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities in June.
Trump also took credit for securing past hostage releases during the conflict with Hamas, claiming: “I’m the one that got all the hostages back. I’ve had so many letters from parents, kids, and others who made it out.”
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s government is preparing a new military operation to occupy Gaza City, already devastated since Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel in October 2023. The move has triggered massive protests across Israel, with tens of thousands demonstrating against Netanyahu, particularly over accusations that he has failed to prioritize the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Internationally, Netanyahu has been strongly criticized for worsening Gaza’s humanitarian crisis and restricting aid deliveries. UN agencies have warned that famine in the enclave has reached catastrophic levels, urging Israel to restore access for relief groups to prevent further starvation. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 266 people — including 122 children — have died from hunger.
In July, 30 countries, including EU members, denounced the “inhumane killing of civilians” and the “drip feeding of aid,” stating that the suffering of Gaza’s population has reached unprecedented depths.
