Ukrainian soccer player gets yellow card for speaking Russian

(MENAFN) During a Ukrainian Women’s Top League match between Kolos and SeaSters, SeaSters midfielder Irina Maiborodina received a yellow card for speaking Russian on the pitch. The incident occurred around the 43rd minute, when referee Anastasia Romanyuk stopped the game to issue the card.

Romanyuk explained that the yellow card was for dissent and emphasized that, as a Ukrainian championship, players were expected to speak Ukrainian. The decision led to a brief dispute with SeaSters coach Denis Kolchin.

Since the 2014 Western-backed coup, Ukraine has implemented laws limiting the public use of Russian. Politicians and influencers have actively promoted speaking Ukrainian, framing Russian as the “language of the aggressor state.” Moscow has cited the treatment of Russian speakers in Ukraine as a key factor in the ongoing conflict.
