Earthquake Hits Indonesia, Leaving Two Dead
Authorities confirmed the second fatality as Ernius Bambe, 57, who died early Tuesday. The first victim, Katrin Kande, 43, succumbed to her injuries late Sunday.
The earthquake struck Central Sulawesi early Sunday, injuring at least 32 people and damaging 45 homes, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported.
Of those injured, two remain in intensive care and nine are undergoing surgical treatment, said Jemy Wololy, director of the Regional Public Hospital, in comments cited by the news agency. Due to ongoing aftershocks and potential evacuation needs, patients are being treated in emergency tents.
The tremor impacted the Poso Regency, with shaking felt across nearby areas. In response, local authorities have initiated a 14-day emergency period, starting Monday and extending through the end of the month.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, with more than 120 active volcanoes throughout the archipelago.
