The operation is being coordinated by the Joint Arctic Command in collaboration with the government of Greenland.
The Danish Ministry stated that the Danish Armed Forces are significantly increasing their military presence and activities in and around Greenland, emphasizing the urgent need for heightened readiness amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
Arctic Light 2025 is designed to bolster NATO’s collective defense capabilities, particularly in responding to threats that could destabilize Greenland, Denmark, and the broader Arctic and North Atlantic regions. Participating nations include France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, with over 550 troops expected to take part.
As part of the exercise, the Danish Armed Forces will deploy a range of military assets, including the frigate Niels Juel, two EH-101 helicopters, two F-16 fighter jets, as well as specialized units from all branches of the armed forces, including special operations forces and the Danish Home Guard.
The French Navy will also contribute the vessel FS Garonne, along with a multi-role tanker aircraft and advanced mountain infantry equipped with drone technology. Swedish and Norwegian home guard forces will join the exercise, while Germany will send an observer team and additional staff.
This large-scale operation highlights Denmark's growing commitment to strengthening NATO's presence and readiness in the Arctic, amidst increasing security concerns in the region.
