U.S. Energy Department Revises Internal Vocabulary
The news outlet referenced an email sent to the department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy shortly after President Donald Trump dismissed the idea of climate change in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
Rachel Overbey, the acting director of external affairs, directed staff to “continue to be conscientious about avoiding any terminology that you know to be misaligned with the Administration’s perspectives and priorities,” as detailed in the news outlet’s report released on Friday.
Other expressions officials were encouraged to omit from both internal and public communications reportedly include “emissions,” “energy transition,” “sustainability/sustainable,” “‘clean’ or ‘dirty’ energy,” “carbon/CO2 footprint,” and “tax breaks/tax credits/subsidies.” While the use of these terms is not explicitly prohibited, their avoidance is strongly suggested.
During his address at the UN last week, Trump described climate change as “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” claiming that previous forecasts of disastrous effects caused by human actions were made “for bad reasons” and never came to fruition.
He warned, “If you don’t get away from this green scam, your country is going to fail – and I’m really good at predicting things,” taking credit for withdrawing from the so-called “fake” 2015 Paris Climate Accord during both his first term and the initial days of his second administration.
