Gunfire, explosions erupt near Venezuela’s presidential palace

(MENAFN) Reports emerged late Monday of gunfire and explosions in the vicinity of Venezuela’s presidential palace in the capital, triggering widespread alarm.

Footage circulating online, though not independently verified, appeared to show armed individuals carrying heavy weapons alongside military vehicles positioned around Miraflores Palace in Caracas. Other clips depicted security forces stationed along the palace perimeter, moving through nearby streets as civilians sought shelter.

The exchange of fire sparked speculation about a potential coup attempt. However, initial information suggested the situation was brought under control, with authorities evacuating government facilities as a precautionary step.

According to local accounts, the incident took place at around 8 p.m. local time (0000 GMT) after reports surfaced of unidentified drones flying above the palace, adding to the uncertainty.

Officials have yet to provide a public briefing clarifying the circumstances.

There have been no confirmed reports of casualties or damage, and no official statements have been released so far.

The incident represents the latest escalation in Venezuela’s ongoing crisis, coming just hours after Vice President Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as acting president. This followed the reported capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, first lady Celia Flores, during a dramatic weekend operation involving US military forces.

Meanwhile, reports citing officials said authorities in Washington were closely monitoring developments related to the gunfire in Venezuela.

"The US is not involved," the official was quoted as saying.
