US weighs action against Iran amid regional tensions

(MENAFN) Washington’s ability to carry out military action against Iran remains limited as officials assess possible moves amid escalating regional tensions and widespread protests inside the country, according to reports citing US officials.

President Donald Trump has been presented with a broad set of military proposals from defense officials, including options that would strike Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, as stated by reports referencing people familiar with the discussions.

The United States has previously carried out direct military action against Iranian nuclear sites.

Last June, US forces launched airstrikes on the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities as part of Operation Midnight Hammer during a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.

Current strategic choices, however, are shaped by the US military’s positioning in the region.

The Pentagon has moved the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford along with other naval vessels from the eastern Mediterranean to the Caribbean, a shift that has reduced American naval firepower in the Middle East.

Despite that redeployment, the US Navy continues to operate three missile-equipped destroyers in the region, including the USS Roosevelt, which recently entered the Red Sea, according to officials. Defense authorities have also confirmed the presence of at least one missile-capable submarine operating in nearby waters.

Other forms of action are also being evaluated. Officials said alternatives such as cyber operations or limited strikes aimed at Iran’s internal security structures remain on the table.

Any military move would likely not be immediate and could be several days away, officials cautioned, warning that such an action could provoke a “vigorous” Iranian response.

Earlier statements from senior military officials indicated that commanders have requested additional time to strengthen defensive positions and prepare for possible retaliation.

Tensions have continued to mount amid growing fears of a US strike as protests expand across Iran. Trump has said he canceled planned talks with Iranian representatives and reaffirmed his support for demonstrators.
