President Trump Informs Congress of Recent US Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Monday officially informed Congress of the military action taken against Iran on Feb. 28, invoking the War Powers Resolution, according to media reports.

In correspondence sent to Chuck Grassley, who serves as the Senate’s president pro tempore, Trump stated that attempts to defuse tensions through diplomacy had proven unsuccessful.

“Despite my Administration’s repeated efforts to achieve a diplomatic solution to Iran’s malign behavior, the threat to the United States and its allies and partners became untenable,” he said in the letter.

The president explained that he had authorized targeted operations inside Iran aimed at multiple strategic sites.

“Accordingly, and at my direction, on February 28, 2026, United States forces conducted precision strikes against numerous targets within Iran, including ballistic missile sites, maritime mining capabilities, air defenses and command and control capabilities,” he added.

According to the letter, the objectives of the strikes included safeguarding American personnel at home and abroad, maintaining secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and supporting the collective self-defense of US allies, including Israel.

“It is not possible at this time to know the full scope and duration of military operations that may be necessary,” Trump said, adding that US forces “remain postured to take further action, as necessary and appropriate to address further threats and attacks upon the United States or its allies and partners.”

The formal notification arrives as several Democratic lawmakers, along with some Republicans, press for a congressional vote on measures that would limit additional military engagement absent clear legislative approval.

The letter was issued against the backdrop of mounting regional instability following coordinated US-Israeli strikes launched early Saturday that, according to reports, killed senior Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and high-ranking military commanders.

In response, Iran has carried out missile and drone attacks aimed at Israel and American military facilities across the Gulf region.
