Anthropic’s AI Chatbot Claude Recovers After Widespread Service Outage

(MENAFN) Anthropic’s AI assistant Claude returned to normal service on Monday after a temporary, large-scale disruption triggered by a sharp rise in user activity, according to company updates.

The interruption happened during a period of record-breaking engagement for the chatbot.

Usage climbed rapidly, partly fueled by growing public attention surrounding a dispute between the company and the US defense establishment.

Engineers at Anthropic determined that the outage stemmed from an extraordinary spike in demand that strained system capacity. After identifying the issue, teams rolled out technical adjustments to restore stability. Internal communications indicate that the firm is now reinforcing its infrastructure, as daily new registrations have recently reached unprecedented highs.

The jump in interest coincides with escalating tensions between Anthropic and the Pentagon over the permitted applications of its AI models in military contexts. The conflict intensified last week when US President Donald Trump instructed federal bodies to gradually discontinue the use of Anthropic’s technology. The directive followed the startup’s refusal to ease contractual protections that bar its systems from being used for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons without human supervision.

Defense officials subsequently described the company as a “supply-chain risk,” a designation that further complicated its standing with government clients.

Despite resistance from federal authorities, Claude’s popularity among the public has grown significantly. Over the weekend, the chatbot rose to the top spot among free applications on Apple’s US App Store, surpassing established rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and has remained near the leading positions since.

Company leaders have expressed optimism about the momentum but acknowledge that sustaining expansion will require addressing technical capacity limits and defining more clearly how the firm will engage with corporate and public-sector customers in the future.
