Number of Deaths Climb to Fifty-Two After Israeli Strikes in Lebanon
A statement from the government’s Disaster Management Unit indicated that Israeli aircraft launched 221 airstrikes across various parts of the country starting early Monday. Earlier assessments from the Lebanese Health Ministry had recorded 31 deaths and 149 injured before the toll was updated.
The escalation followed an announcement by Hezbollah that it had struck a military position in northern Israel using rockets and drones. The group described the action as retaliation for continued Israeli operations in Lebanon and for the joint US-Israeli military campaign directed at Iran.
Since Saturday, US and Israeli forces have carried out extensive strikes against Iran, resulting in the deaths of several senior Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with high-ranking military commanders, as reported by various sources.
Despite a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah that came into force in late November 2024, Israel has allegedly carried out almost daily breaches inside Lebanese territory, leading to hundreds of additional casualties.
Israel initially launched military operations against Lebanon in October 2023, later intensifying the campaign into a broader war by September 2024. Since then, more than 4,000 individuals have been killed and approximately 17,000 wounded, according to reported figures.
