Indian PM Urges Stability in Middle East as Regional Tensions Rise
“India stands for peace and stability,” Modi stated during a joint press briefing with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in New Delhi. He emphasized that New Delhi advocates resolving conflicts “through dialogue and diplomacy” and reaffirmed India’s commitment to protecting its citizens in the region.
Carney is visiting India for four days, during which both leaders committed to boosting bilateral trade, aiming to reach $50 billion.
Modi’s call for calm follows joint US-Israeli military strikes on Iran last Saturday, which prompted Iran to launch drone and missile attacks targeting US-linked facilities in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Among those reportedly killed in the strikes was Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who died after the US-Israeli bombardment of his Tehran compound, according to Iranian authorities.
On Sunday, Modi held discussions with his Israeli counterpart to address the “current regional situation,” according to statements shared on social media. He voiced India’s concerns over the unfolding crisis, stressing that civilian protection must remain paramount and reiterated the need for an early halt to hostilities.
In response, the Indian government convened the Cabinet Committee on Security, the nation’s top security decision-making body chaired by the prime minister. The committee expressed deep concern over the safety of India’s large expatriate community in the region and instructed relevant departments to take all necessary measures to assist affected nationals.
