Met Chief Says He Understands Why Women Lack Trust in Met Police

(MENAFN) The commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Mark Rowley, has acknowledged that he understands why some women continue to lack trust in the force, in an interview marking the fifth anniversary of Sarah Everard’s murder.

“Several ghastly cases of police officers committing awful offences against women” have inevitably affected public confidence in the UK’s largest police force, Sir Mark said.

He stressed that more women are now reporting allegations, but warned that rebuilding trust in London will take time. “I can give the reassurance that we're doing everything possible to avoid people who are a risk to anybody—women and children or otherwise—joining the organisation or staying in this organisation,” he said.

Since 2022, the commissioner reported, 1,500 individuals have been “rooted out” and removed from the force, many for inappropriate behaviour toward women.

Despite these efforts, some women’s charities maintain that confidence in policing remains at a critical low.

The Everard case remains a stark reminder: five years ago, she was abducted while walking home in south London by Wayne Couzens, a serving police officer at the time, who drove her to Kent, raped, and killed her. Couzens received a whole-life sentence for the murder.

Sir Mark took over as commissioner in September 2022, succeeding Dame Cressida Dick, who resigned amid a series of damaging controversies including the Everard case. “We've got lots of evidence that we've rooted out a lot of the problem from the organisation,” he said. “That's why 1,500 people have been forced out.”
