Kazakh Citizens Head to Polls as Referendum on New Constitution Starts
The referendum poses a single question to citizens: “Do you accept the new Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the draft of which was published in the mass media on Feb. 12, 2026?” Ballots will be considered valid if more than half of eligible voters—around 6.2 million people—take part.
The Central Referendum Commission is required to announce the final results by March 21, no later than seven days after the vote.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev issued a decree on Feb. 11 calling for the referendum, highlighting that the draft Constitution incorporates “important progressive norms.” He said its adoption “will give a powerful impetus to the development of Kazakhstan and will help realize the potential of every citizen.”
Tokayev emphasized that the new Constitution would transform the country from a “super-presidential form of government” to a presidential republic with a strong and authoritative parliament.
