Gold Drops Sharply Amid US–Iran Truce Uncertainty
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council presidency, Iran stated that on 19 April 2026, US military forces carried out what it described as a “hostile and unlawful attack” on the Iranian vessel Toska, near Iran’s coastal waters.
The mission argued that the incident represents “a grave and manifest violation of the fundamental principles of international law,” and alleged that the operation involved “acts of coercion, intimidation, and the reckless endangerment of the vessel’s crew and their families.”
It further claimed that “the deliberate intimidation and psychological terror inflicted upon the crew and their families further compound the egregious nature of this act,” adding that the incident “bears the hallmarks of piracy in nature and amounts to a dangerous escalation that severely endangers the safety and security of vital shipping lanes.”
Iran also described the event as a breach of the ceasefire agreement dated 8 April 2026 and classified it as an act of aggression under UN Resolution 3314, which defines acts of aggression between states.
Tehran called for the immediate and unconditional release of the vessel, its crew, and their families. It also urged the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General to take what it described as an “immediate, firm, and principled position” by condemning the incident and ensuring accountability.
The letter warned that the situation “poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security,” describing the incident as a dangerous escalation that further intensifies an already unstable regional environment.
