US, Iran Are Near Preliminary Deal on Ending Conflict, Nuclear Talks

(MENAFN) The United States and Iran are close to reaching a preliminary understanding that could bring an end to their ongoing conflict and establish a structure for wider nuclear negotiations, according to reports on Wednesday citing US officials and sources familiar with discussions inside the White House.

As stated by reports, Washington is expecting Tehran to respond within 48 hours on several core issues that remain under negotiation.

While no final deal has been reached, US officials reportedly believe the current discussions represent the most advanced stage of engagement between the two sides since the conflict began.

The proposed arrangement would serve as an initial memorandum declaring a halt to hostilities and setting a 30-day window for more detailed negotiations on a comprehensive agreement.

According to reports, the next phase of talks would address key issues including the resumption of transit through the Strait of Hormuz, restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities, and the gradual lifting of US sanctions.

Possible locations for the follow-up negotiations are being considered, with Islamabad and Geneva mentioned as potential venues.

Under the draft outline, Iran would agree to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment activities, while the United States would begin easing sanctions and release several billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets.

Both sides would also reportedly ease measures affecting maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz, including limits on Iranian shipping operations and restrictions tied to US naval presence in the area.
