Provided by AGPThe explosion occurred in the Bab Sharqi area after a military unit reportedly discovered an improvised explosive device near one of the ministry’s facilities.
According to Defense Ministry communications cited by SANA, forces attempted to secure and dismantle the device before a vehicle bomb detonated nearby.
The blast resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to multiple others, with emergency services director Najib al-Naasan telling local media that 12 people were wounded in total.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes as Syria’s new authorities continue efforts to stabilize security conditions following major political changes in the country. Former president Bashar al-Assad was ousted in late 2024 after more than two decades in power, prompting a transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa to take office in early 2025.
Authorities have since been attempting to consolidate control and improve security nationwide amid sporadic violent incidents and ongoing instability.
