Trump Shuts Door on Iran Concessions
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump declared Monday he is firmly closed to any Iranian concessions, signaling a hardened stance just one day after receiving Tehran's updated response to a proposed nuclear agreement.
In a phone interview with the New York Post, Trump warned that Iran fully understands what consequences are coming, saying the country knows "what's going to be happening soon."
When pressed on his earlier Friday comments — in which he indicated openness to a 20-year moratorium on Iranian uranium enrichment — Trump cut the line of questioning short.
"I'm not open to anything right now," he interjected.
The president offered little elaboration, citing the sensitivity of ongoing developments.
"I can't really talk to you about it. Too many things are happening," he said.
Trump dismissed suggestions he harbors frustration toward Tehran, but left little doubt that Washington retains — and is prepared to use — significant leverage.
"I can tell you they want to make a deal more than ever, because they know we're -- what's going to be happening soon," he said. "It's a negotiation. I don't want to be stupid."
The remarks come as media reported Monday, citing a senior U.S. official, that the White House considers Iran's latest offer inadequate to form the basis of any agreement.
The tension follows a stark Sunday warning from Trump, who declared that "the clock is ticking" for Tehran, cautioning that Iran risked being left with nothing if its leadership failed to move decisively.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pushed back Monday, rejecting what he characterized as counterproductive rhetoric around the negotiations.
"We negotiate with dignity and will never back down," Pezeshkian said in a statement published on his office's official website.
