Kremlin Says Washington Has Not Responded to Warning on Planned Strikes in Kyiv
Speaking at a briefing in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian authorities had yet to receive a response from Washington following the warning. He also noted that Moscow had taken notice of statements from European officials who indicated they would remain in the Ukrainian capital despite the announcement.
“For us, the priority is the warning that was issued,” Peskov said.
When asked to clarify what Russian officials meant by “systematic strikes,” Peskov declined to provide details about the expected frequency or timing of the attacks.
“Systematicity is not the same as periodicity,” he said.
The comments followed an announcement by the Russian Foreign Ministry that a new phase of strikes targeting military-linked infrastructure in Kyiv was being prepared. Russian officials also advised foreign nationals to leave the city and urged residents to avoid areas associated with military and administrative activities.
According to reports, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the issue during a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
European officials largely dismissed the warning. Katarina Mathernova, the European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, said in a social media post that EU representatives would remain in Kyiv, describing the warning as “a sign of weakness.”
Russian authorities said the decision to launch the planned campaign was linked to what they described as a Ukrainian strike on a college building in Starobilsk, which Moscow said had “overflowed the cup of patience” and prompted the move toward “systematic strikes” against targets in Kyiv.
